Lacoste, 1987

53.5″x54″ acrylic and paper on canvas

This painting is a big throwback. It started out as a commercial sign for a rural French furnace manufacturer. A similar sign hung in Lacoste’s Rue Basse during the 80s and 90s.

I tried to reproduce that sign when I returned to Providence in early 1988 but it didn’t work for some reason and I improvised a solution and moved on.

Looking back, it’s clear that the sign is a stylistically similar to many of the Blue Note album covers designed by Reid Miles during the ’50s and ’60s.
